Some show or series or fanfic writer ought to switch the canon. They ought to change Reichenbach. Imagine: John is kidnapped by some sub crime-syndicate of Moriarty’s - one that is more like a crime family, bigger on loyalty and code and tradition - and they keep John prisoner. Sherlock, of course, is made to believe John is dead, part of burning the heart out of him. That one moment where the sniper is on him, he is fake shot and killed - very dramatic. John is being held prisoner and is flipping a shit because he doesn’t want to die and Sherlock thinks he is dead and fuck. So John is clever and slowly works his way out. He starts by being a good prisoner, then a good prisoner who occasionally help out, then a good minor helper of crime – all slowly gaining the trust of the crime group until he finally can get away and get back to Sherlock. Years later.
Sherlock has to deal with John being dead for years.

Cause John is caught between feeling guilty for aiding crime but also starting to sympathize with his captors
And Sherlock is sinking lower and lower into depression because “John is dead”
